Boston (Sept 2022)

Boston is great for a quick weekend trip from Philly, so we visited over Labor Day weekend 2022.  Taking Amtrak is a low-stress way to travel, but at 5,5 hours it is a long trip. Next time, we might fly. We stayed in the Seaport area which is a great location, easy walking distance to sites and lots of bars/restaurants nearby.

Sites

Freedom Trail - such the typical tourist thing to do, but it never disappoints.

Kings Chapel is beautiful.  The original wooden church was moved in its entirety to Lunenberg Nova Scotia and renamed St. John’s Anglican Church when Loyalists were driven from Boston during the Revolution.  King’s Chapel became the first Unitarian church in the US.

Climb the 294 Steps of the Bunker Hill monument (the battle actually took place on neighboring Breed’s Hill).  The museum is definitely worth 30 minutes.

USS Constitution is very interesting to tour.

Take the Harbor Walk back from Charlestown into Boston.

Restaurants & Bars

Trattoria il Panino - the north end has countless great Italian restaurants, this one was recommended to us.  It was excellent, Tam got Lobster Ravioli in Crab blush sauce and I got Lasagna with beef sauce, both were delicious.

Barking Crab.  Probably a tourist trap, but the fish tacos were  good and the views were great. So nice to eat outside on a nice day.

Warren Tavern (1780) in Charlestown is a great place for a drink near the Freedom Trail.

Cheers Bar was a surprisingly nice experience, the upstairs bar was great and the bartender was really friendly.

Drink - excellent cocktail bar in Seaport.   Recommended by a friend, it’s a great experience.  They specialize in custom drinks, tell the bartender what liquors and flavors you like, and they make a custom drink.  Reasonably priced too!

The Tam - named after my beautiful, amazing wife.  It’s a great dive bar with no kitchen, but you’re allowed to bring food in.   Just grab a couple slices at New York Pizza next door (good pizza!).

Our first trips to Europe were focused on the popular sites: Venice, Rome, Florence, London, Paris, Prague.  As the kids matured, we got more adventurous: Russia, Israel, Egypt, China, Turkey, Peru, Iceland.  All were amazing.  Now the kids are traveling on their own, sharing our love of travel.

Here is a picture of the kids in a gondola on the Grand Canal in Venice, during their very first European trip.

All 50 States

As a family, we traveled throughout the US, visiting all 50 states before the kids graduated from college.  We most often visited cities, but really enjoyed National Parks like Yellowstone, Arches, Yosemite, Mt Ranier, Acadia, and many others. Our last two of the 50 states came on our trip to Washington and Oregon.  Here are pictures of Mt Ranier, and the family entering Oregon (our 50th).

Welcome to Where in the World are the Wendells
We created this blog to document our travels in retirement, as a journal and place to record great places we've visited, memorable meals we've enjoyed, and fun things we've done.
Tammy and I have been privileged to visit all 50 US state and 40 countries - but we are just getting started!
The following posts are some of our favorite places we've visited over the years.
